Birds nest fern

Asplenium australasicum

A popular houseplant, the Birds Nest Fern also thrives outdoors. Mostly found in moist and sheltered forests in its natural habitat, it happily grows in urban settings in protected gardens, and outdoor areas in dappled sunlight. The green fronds can reach up to two metres, growing in a tall upright shape with broad leaves, creating a wonderful focal point in a garden. It can handle some cold temperatures but ideally would be protected from frost. This variant doesn’t need the same level of humidity of many other ferns to thrive, making it ideal for the low maintenance garden and a little more forgiving for the forgetful houseplant owner.
